El mundo de los viajes en tiempos de #quedarnosencasa - Foodie FlashPacker

Desde Mérida, en México, donde vive actualmente, nos pusimos en contacto con un amigo Nathan Aguilera (más conocido en el mundo de los viajeros como Foodie Flashpacker) para que nos cuente de primera mano cómo fueron sus inicios, cuáles eran sus expectativas y según su perspectiva, profesional y experimentada, como este momento impacta en su trabajo y el futuro de los viajes.

First a brief comment on you and your work.

My name is Nathan Aguilera and I'm the creator of Foodie Flashpacker, a food-focused travel blog. 

I left my home of Oklahoma City more than six years ago on what I thought at the time would be a six-month tour of SE Asia. 

In these six years I've visited more than sixty countries across five continents. Along the way I've started a successful travel blog that reaches nearly 100,000 people monthly. 

Primero un breve comentario de vos y de tu trabajo

Mi nombre es Nathan Aguilera y soy el creador de Foodie Flashpacker, un blog enfocado en los viajes y la comida.
Dejé mi hogar en la ciudad de Oklahoma hace más de seis años atrás en lo que pensaba en ese tiempo que sería un viaje de seis meses por el Sudeste de Asia.

How did you start as a blogger/influencer? Was it planned or not?

When i left home i had the idea to start a travel blog but i didn't pursue it immediately. In retrospect, i wish i had. 

Instead, i waited until i had been traveling two years and i was getting a bit burnt out on traveling but i didn't want to go home yet so i needed to think of something i could do on the road that allowed me to continue traveling at the same time. So, i started my blog! 

At first i thought the blog would just help structure my time and give me purpose. I didn't anticipate at the time that it would become a full-time job but i love the work and i have made some of the best friends of my life from the travel community so it's definitely worth it. 

¿Cómo comenzaste como blogger/influencer? ¿Fue planeado o no?

Cuando deje mi casa tenía la idea de comenzar un blog de viajes pero no lo inicie inmediatamente. En retrospectiva desearía haberlo hecho.
En cambio espere hasta haber viajado dos años y estar un poco “quemado” de viajar aunque tampoco quería regresar a mi casa aun así que necesitaba algo que pudiera hacer “en el camino” y que me permitiera seguir viajando al mismo tiempo. ¡Así que comencé mi blog!
Al principio pensé que el blog me permitiría al menos estructurar mi tiempo y darme un propósito. No anticipé en ese momento de que esto se convertiría en un trabajo de tiempo completo, pero amo el trabajo y he hecho los mejores amigos de mi vida en la comunidad viajera, asi que definitivamente valio la pena.

Is there any "glam" on your work or is it just a fantasy?

There is definitely a bit of glam to it! I think a lot of time people downplay the glam part because there is a lot of work that goes into it but there is some glam for sure.

I have been hosted by luxury properties all over the world. Villas with private suites in Bali, five-star properties in Mexico, spa hotels in Bulgaria an so many more. 

Also, when you work with tourism boards they always want to show you the best of the best that their destination has to offer. This often means luxury hotels, fancy dinners and private tours. 

But yes, there is a lot of work that goes into it.

When you see one perfect photo you must understand that it did not happen by chance and that this is a real job for us. 

I wish when I visited these luxury properties that I only got to lay around and have a butler bring me drinks (although there is often a bit of this!) but usually my time is spent doing property tours, taking and editing photos, and interviewing staff to get my story.

¿Hay algo de Glamour en tu trabajo o es solo una fantasía?

¡Si, definitivamente hay un poco de Glamour en el! Muchas veces la gente minimiza la parte del glamour porque hay mucho trabajo detrás pero hay glamour por cierto.
Me he alojado en propiedades de lujo en todo el mundo. Villas con suites privadas en Bali, propiedades 5 estrellas en México, hoteles con spa en Bulgaria y muchos más.

Además cuando trabajas con  Direcciones o Secretarías de Turismo quieren mostrarte siempre lo mejor de lo mejor que tienen en su destino y eso, la mayoría de las veces es, hoteles de lujo, cenas glamorosas y tours privados.
Pero sí, hay mucho trabajo por detrás. Cuando ves la foto perfecta debes entender que esto no sucede por casualidad y que eso es un verdadero trabajo para nosotros.
Desearía que cuando voy a esos hoteles lujosos solo tuviera que estar descansando por ahí y tener un mozo que me traiga tragos ( ¡a veces hay un poco de eso!) pero usualmente paso mi tiempo haciendo tours por la propiedad, tomando y editando fotos y entrevistando a gente del staff para mi historia.

As a travel and food influencer/blogger how do you think the impact of this Pandemia will be in the next months related to you job?

Right now I've lost more than 90% of income from my travel blog.

I make the majority of my income from advertising revenue and no one is searching for and booking travel at the moment. 

Also, I had talks lined up with several destinations about press trips and those conversations have all been put on hold at the moment. 

I think sadly you'll see many travel blogs fail in the coming months. Or their creators will have to look for a different kind of work and not be able to put as much attention on their blogs/Youtube channels/Instagram accounts.

¿Como influencer/blogger de viajes y comida, cual crees que será el impacto de esta pandemia en los próximos meses, sobre tu trabajo?

Hasta el momento he perdido más del 90% de los ingresos de mi blog.
La mayoría de mis ingresos vienen del revenue publicitario y actualmente no hay nadie buscando ni reservando viajes.
Además ya tenía conversaciones encaminadas con varios destinos y esas conversaciones han quedado “colgadas” por el momento.
Creo que, tristemente, veremos muchos blogs de viajes “caer” en los meses que vienen o sus creadores deberán buscar otras fuentes de ingresos y eso no les dejará mucho tiempo para atender sus canales de youtube, blogs o cuentas de instagram.

On this self isolation and no travel times, how do you stay in contact with your followers? Do you have a plan or you do it more spontaneously?

I am mostly in contact with my followers via social media. I make it a point to try and respond to each person that comments on my posts and also those that direct message me. 

It's mostly spontaneous. I respond when I have time to sit down and go through messages. 

I love hearing from people from all over the world and I really believe that a love of food is something that runs through every culture. So in this way, we all have things in common, a way that we can connect. 

I always joke that no matter how many countries I visit I notice three things that are universally loved: babies, music and food. 

¿En estos tiempos de aislamiento y de no viajar, como seguís en contacto con tus seguidores? ¿Tenés un plan o es algo más “espontaneo”?

Mayormente estoy en contacto con mis seguidores vía redes sociales. Me propongo responder a cada persona que comentar mi post y también mí a los que me envían mensajes directos.
Es mayormente espontaneo. Respondo cuando tengo tiempo de sentarme a hacerlo y voy a los mensajes.
Me gusta saber de la gente alrededor del mundo y creo que el amor por la comida es algo que cruza a todas las culturas, así que de esa forma todos tenemos algo en común, algo con que conectarnos.
Siempre bromeo sobre que no importa cuántos países visite hay tres cosas que son universalmente “amadas”: bebes, música y comida.

Do you think is good or not to talk about "travelling" when most of the world can not move?

Yes, definitely. 

I think now is a great time to share stories of places that we know and love and to think of the places we hope to go when we can start traveling again. 

¿Crees que es positivo o no, hablar de viajes cuando la mayoría del mundo no puede hacerlo?
Si, definitivamente.

Creo que es un gran momento para compartir historias de lugares que conocemos y nos gustan y pensar en esos lugares a donde esperamos ir cuando podamos viajar de nuevo.

What do you think will be the travel business and the travel journalism once the world comes out from this Pandemia?

Travel after coronavirus - I think there's going to be a lot of talk about visiting destinations that were hit the hardest- places like Italy and S Korea. They will really need out support once all of this passes as I fear these countries will be stigmatized.

¿Cómo crees que será el negocio de los viajes y el periodismo de viajes una vez que el mundo salga de esta Pandemia?

Viajar después del Coronavirus- Creo que habrá muchas conversaciones sobre los destinos a visitar, especialmente aquellos que fueron muy golpeados como Italia y Corea del Sur. Van a necesitar mucho apoyo después que esto pase porque creo que serán países que quedarán estigmatizados.

Do you think we will witness mayor changes in the industry? Like what?

Yes, I do not think we will be seeing as many budget flights as before. I feel like the airlines will cancel many routes and decrease frequency so with planes filling up there will be less available seats able to be sold cheaply. 

Also, the cruise industry will be hard hit and I don't see many people doing cruises soon so you may be able to find good deals on cruises. 

¿Crees que veremos cambios importantes en la industria? ¿Cómo cuáles?
Sí. No creo que veamos muchos vuelos “baratos” como antes. Pienso que las aerolíneas cancelaran muchas rutas y bajara la frecuencia así que para “llenar” los vuelos habrá menos asientos disponibles para vender a bajo costo.

Además la industria de los Cruceros ha sido muy golpeada y no veo a mucha gente tomando cruceros en un futuro cercano por lo que quizás se encuentren buenas oportunidades allí.

What is your proposal or your ideas to help recovering the travel industry?

I think many people will have exhausted their savings in this time so even when borders and airports reopen I think the majority of people will not be able to begin traveling immediately. 

Therefore, I feel more people will be doing smaller, more regional trips. Countries will need to promote travel more to their own citizens rather than trying to entice as many international travelers as before. 

¿Cuál sería tu propuesta o tus ideas para ayudar a recuperar la industria de los viajes?

Pienso que mucha gente va a quedarse sin ahorros mientras pasamos esto y para el momento en que se abran las fronteras y los aeropuertos la mayoría de la gente no va a poder viajar inmediatamente. Además me parece que más gente estará haciendo más pequeños y más cortos viajes regionales. Los países necesitaran promocionar más para sus propios ciudadanos que  entusiasmar a viajeros internacionales como hacían antes.
